07/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU condemns another execution, the third in 2014. During the evening of Wednesday 5 November, the EU strongly condemned the execution of Aliaksandr Hrunou, which reportedly took place on 4 November. The 26-year-old was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of Belarus in April 2014 for the murder of a student who was stabbed with a knife more than 100 times in September 2012. “We are conscious of the serious nature of the crimes for which Mr Hrunou was convicted”, said the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini - nevertheless adding that the EU opposes capital punishment, which is a “cruel and inhumane punishment” that cannot be justified under any circumstances. The EU called on Minsk to join a global moratorium on the death penalty. This execution is the third in Belarus in 2014 - the only country in Europe still applying capital punishment. (CG)
