Brussels, 07/11/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 5 November, the European Union called for the release of Ghoncheh Ghavami, a young British-Iranian woman sentenced to prison for having tried to attend a man's international volley-ball match. “This young woman should be released”, said the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. “The arrest as well as the possible sentence of one year in prison for having tried to attend a sports event seems entirely misplaced”, the spokesperson added. Mogherini's spokesperson reiterated that the EU has called on Iran “on many occasions” to live up to the international human rights obligations that Iran itself has signed up to, “notably the rights of women”. Ghavami, 25, was questioned on 20 June when she was taking part in a gathering of women wanting to attend the sports event. She was released before being questioned again several days later. Since then she has been in Evine prison for over 130 days. (CG)
