EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) bahrain

21/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU disappointed by postponement of Nabeel Rajab trial. On Monday 20 October, the EU expressed its disappointment at the decision taken the previous day by Bahrain's lower criminal court to adjourn the hearing in the case of human rights activist Nabeel Rajab until 29 October and to keep him in detention until that date. Rajab is being investigated over tweets that allegedly denigrate a public institution. The European External Action Service (EEAS) says that, while every citizen must respect public institutions, it firmly believes that freedom of expression is the cornerstone of any democratic society and a key prerequisite if Bahrain is to overcome its current challenges. The EEAS has stated that it will closely monitor the judicial proceedings against Rajab, and hoped that a decision would be reached quickly and that the legal process would be transparent and correct.
