High-level Ebola meeting on 16 October

Brussels, 13/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - A high-level meeting on Ebola in Brussels on Thursday 16 October will bring together health ministers to discuss the issue of border controls, Health Commissioner Tonio Borg's spokesperson Frédéric Vincent confirmed on Monday 13 October. Letters of invitation, co-signed by Borg and Italian Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin, were sent out to all member states on Friday and the Commission is expecting replies by tomorrow evening to give an indication of the countries that will take part in the meeting. “The idea is to discuss in particular the issue of controls on arrival in the EU. This is a question that arose last week”, Vincent said. On Thursday 9 October, the United Kingdom announced that it wanted to put in place tougher border controls, with the introduction, in some airports and railway stations, of screening of travellers arriving from the countries affected by the Ebola epidemic. A similar measure had been taken the previous day by the United States. “Member states can put in place such measures at arrivals in airports and stations. The Commission believes, however, that there should be at least a minimum level of coordination. This, then, will be the main point for discussion”, he stated. (IL)
