Confirmation of mandates for negotiating rail reform

Brussels, 13/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - Inter-institutional negotiating mandates from the new European Parliament for the 4th Railway package and revision of weights and dimensions of lorries have been confirmed. MEPs from the transport committee at the EP (TRAN) voted for these mandates on Monday 13 October. They confirmed their positions on the six regulations from the 4th railway package (votes ranging from between 37 and 38 for and 2 and 3 against) and have therefore confirmed the new rapporteurs, Wim van de Camp (EPP, the Netherlands) for public service contracts and David-Maria Sassoli (S&D, Italy) on railway governance. President of the TRAN committee Michael Cramer (Greens/EFA, Germany) also explained that railway reform would be treated as a package, without separating political and technical chapters. The negotiating mandate on the report by Jorg Leichtfried (S&D, Austria) on the very controversial issue of mega trucks was approved by 38 votes in favour, with 2 against. The TRAN committee accounts also granted negotiating mandates for railway transport statistics and the transport of goods by inland waterways. (MD)
