06/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU calls on Tehran not to execute Ryhaneh Jabbari. Speaking through the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, the EU has urged the Iranian authorities not to execute Reyhaneh Jabbari, and to grant her a retrial as questions have arisen about the integrity of her trial. Jabbari was sentenced to death in 2009 for killing Morteza Abdolai Sarbandi, a former agent from the Iranian Ministry for Intelligence and National Security. Jabari, 26, stated that she had acted in defence because she would have been killed as he was trying to sexually assault her. “We remain deeply concerned about the high number of executions that have taken place so far this year and call on the Iranian authorities to refrain from using the death penalty”, Ashton's spokesperson stated.
