Brussels, 06/10/2014 (Agence Europe) - The Czech commissioner-designate for the post of Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality was deemed to be competent but not precise enough on certain aspects of the very vast portfolio that could be allocated to her. She has been called on to complete the oral responses she provided during her hearing, with written explanations (see EUROPE 11169 and 11167). Given the scale and complexity of the portfolio, she will have to explain how she intends to organise her work in her services, which cover very different areas overseen by four parliamentary committees. She will also be asked how she intends to guarantee that the same attention will be focused on each of the different policies. The explanations requested for the Consumers part of her triple portfolio make up a small portion of the answers.
MEPs in the IMCO committee were pleased with her commitment to promote a European framework for consumer rights and would like to know how she intends to guarantee consumer protection in legislative proposals and the legal approach she advocates in the context of legislative harmonisation. Jourova will also have to explain how she intends to guarantee compatibility between the new directive on consumer rights and the proposal on common sales law, without weakening consumer protection.
