France wants review of nitrates directive

Brussels, 10/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - After the Court of Justice ruled against it for a second time on 4 September for failure to comply with EU legislation seeking to prevent and tackle water pollution by nitrates from agricultural sources (Directive 91/676/EEC), France, which is still under threat of heavy financial penalties, has no intention of simply accepting its fate (see EUROPE 11148 and 10998). It intends to work within the European Union on a proposal to review this directive, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has said. “We will work to amend this nitrates directive, the prescriptive approach of which has very clearly demonstrated its limits”, he is quoted by AFP as telling farmers on 6 September.
