First call for European inter-connection imminent

Brussels, 10/09/2014 (Agence Europe) - An unprecedented call for proposals for European investment in transport infrastructure will be presented on Thursday 11 September by the outgoing European Commissioner for Transport, Siim Kallas (see EUROPE 11145).

The amounts expected to be made available will be around €11 billion. They will come from the recently created financial instrument for 2014-2020 financial programming, the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) (€26 billion available). This will be a very sizeable amount, given the fact that European funding for transport policy in the previous financial programming for 2007-2013 did not go above €8 billion.

The first tranche from the CEF will be available this year and will be used to co-finance transport infrastructure projects located in the nine Trans-European Transport Network corridors (TEN-T). It is possible that the work on the selected projects could begin next year. They will have to be selected for their ability to connect Western and Eastern Europe. (MD)
