22/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - Conflict in Syria has led to more than 191,000 deaths in three years. On 22 August, the United Nations announced that more than 191,000 people had been killed in Syria from the outbreak of the conflict in March 2011 until 30 April 2014, and the number of deaths has more than doubled in a year (93,000). More than 85% of those killed were men. At least 8,800 children have been killed, more than 2,100 of them under the age of ten. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay issued a press release lashing out at “international paralysis” vis-à-vis Syria and saying that the “killers, destroyers and torturers in Syria have been empowered and emboldened by the international paralysis.” She said the dwindling global interest in Syria was “scandalous,” and deeply regretted the way “the fighting in Syria and its dreadful impact on millions of civilians has dropped off the international radar.” (CG)
