New support programme for continental integration

Brussels, 20/08/2014 (Agence Europe) - At the beginning of August, the European Commission launched the first phase of the “pan-African programme”, which will promote Africa's integration process at a continental level.

The programme, which the European institution believes will open up new prospects for cooperation between the EU and Africa, will fund activities in a range of areas: mobility, climate change, trade, etc.

For the period 2014-2017 an envelope of €415 million has been allocated. The projects co-funded under this first phase will cover the following fields: sustainable agriculture, the environment, higher education, governance, infrastructure, migration, information technology, research and innovation.

Over the period 2014-2020, the programme will have a budget of €845 million.

“The major innovation of this programme is that it allows the EU to link up the cooperation it has with Northern Africa, South Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. It will also help us to achieve better policy coherence for development by building synergies between development cooperation and other EU policies”, said Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
