Brussels, 17/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 17 July, the European Commission published guidelines to help member states make the most of the changes to the EU directive on the re-use of public sector information (the PSI directive). The guidelines explain things like how to grant access weather and traffic updates or information about land registries. The Commission says that open data can be used to develop innovative value-added products and services, such as mobile apps, to encourage investment in sectors that rely on data. The guidelines were drawn up from the results of a public consultation process that ended on 22 November 2013 on the following issues: 1) licensing: the guidelines list cases where public sector bodies can allow the re-use of documents without setting any conditions or licence requirements and when the re-use of personal data is allowed; 2) data sets: five categories of information are listed which are of particular interest to business and other potential re-users and could therefore be given priority for being made available; 3) cost: an overview of how public sector bodies should calculate the amount they charge re-users.
