Brussels, 17/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - An action plan for the preservation of the historical site of Pompeii, in Italy, has been put together by European Commissioner for Regional Development Johannes Hahn and the Italian authorities, to make the best possible use of the available European structural funds. €105 million have been earmarked by the cohesion policy under the programming period 2007-2013 and the Italian state to complete a major conservation, maintenance and improvement project on the archaeological site, which was approved in 2012. The new action plan “lays down clear targets and specific deadlines for the future and a range of measures to ensure that these are respected”, said Hahn (12/2014, 04/2015, 08/2015 and 12/2015). Among the actions planned, the aim is to consolidate the structures of the site, build a water channelling system and improve staff training. Other action focuses on public procurement procedures and tackling organised crime. The European commissioner is particularly attentive to the success of the project and of the action plan, given the importance of Pompeii, “a jewel in the crown of the cultural heritage of Europe”, to the Region of Campania and its economy, and to Italy.
