Brussels, 09/07/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 9 July, the Council of the EU prolonged the EU police mission for the Palestinian Territories (EUPOL COPPS) until 30 June 2015.
A budget of € 9.8 million has been allocated for the mission's activities between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015. Since 1 July 2014, the mission has been headed by Rodolphe Mauget from France.
The police mission is part of wider EU efforts in support of Palestinian state building “in the context of working towards a comprehensive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution”, says a Council press release. Since January 2006, the mission has been assisting the Palestinian Authority in building the institutions of a future state of Palestine in the areas of policing and criminal justice (see EUROPE 10954).
At the start of July, the Council also extended the mandate of the EU border assistance mission for the Rafah crossing point (EU BAM Rafah) until 30 June 2015. (CG)
