EU, US and China working closely on product safety

Brussels, 19/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - Considerable progress was made at the fourth high-level trilateral meeting between the EU, the US and China on product safety, in Brussels on Thursday 19 June. Neven Mimica, the European Commissioner for consumer policy, Elliot F. Kaye, the executive director of the CPSC (The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission) and Sun Dawei, Deputy Minister for General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ) expressed their joint intentions of continuing regulatory cooperation between the three parties, reinforcing cooperation in controls throughout the food chain and promoting a culture of safety throughout the supply and distribution chain.

To implement this consensus, the three parties agreed to make the necessary resources available, carry out regular exchanges of information as far upstream as possible on major safety issues and the developments they are planning for their respective consumer product monitoring systems and to clarify the practical aspects of cooperation between the authorities to implement the concept of “seamless surveillance” of consumer products, to vouchsafe reinforced safety checks throughout the entire supply and distribution chain. The next trilateral meeting will take place in 2016. (AN)
