French report critical of internet platforms

Brussels, 16/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - According to the report published by the Conseil national français du numérique (CNN), the French body responsible for digital affairs, US internet giants such as Google, Apple and Amazon, lack transparency in their conditions of use. The report works from the Google case, where the European Commission investigated Google's abuse of its dominant position, as the basis for analysing other platforms. The CNN highlights the fact that the global digital environment is concentrated around a handful of US companies that impact on innovation, access to information and the exercise of the rights and freedoms in the information society. The CNN suggests setting up “ratings agencies”, which would assess the behaviour of these platforms in terms of personal data protection and equal access to all services. It also called on the Commission to seriously examine the question of net neutrality in the autumn. (IL)
