Brussels, 05/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - The eurosceptic European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group - which includes David Cameron's UK Conservatives - could make a decision next week on whether or not to accept German anti-European MEPs from Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) within its ranks, said an ECR spokesperson on Wednesday 4 June - without giving further detail on the date. The British press have recently been reporting on this rapprochement of the AfD with the ECR - a rapprochement which could harm Cameron in his resolve to convince Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel to let go of Jean-Claude Juncker as the next Commission president. According to the Financial Times, the ECR vote on whether or not to let the AfD sit with it has been postponed. The AfD party has deposited an official request with the ECR to join this group. The ECR Group is due to elect its new leader next Thursday as its outgoing leader, Martin Callanan, was not re-elected in the European elections. (SP)
