Brussels, 05/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 5 June, the leaders of the G7 confirmed all of their commitments to the poorest countries of the world, particularly in Africa.
They are also determined to help to establish an ambitious global development programme post-2015 which will combine the “clear and measurable objectives” of fighting extreme poverty and promoting sustainable development, to succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). This programme will also promote tackling climate change, peace and security, democratic governance, the rule of law, gender equality and human rights for all, adds the G7, which undertakes to build a global partnership in order to implement it.
“We are preparing the initiative in order to set the example in terms of immunisation, food security and health. The G7 has shown that solidarity towards the poorest countries of the world continues to be a major concern”, said José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission.
French President François Hollande added: “Development (…), there are mechanisms which already exist, funds which have already been set up and which must be fully mobilised. There are also health issues regarding the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and an immunisation programme. Africa is a continent of the future. Africa is both a source of growth, a source of development potential and a demographic source for the world. We must therefore ensure a policy to promote its growth and provide it with the proper conditions for development, with requirements in terms of good governance and the fight against corruption. And which allows this young continent not to be stricken by climate and health plagues”. (AN with EH and CG)
