Brussels, 04/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - Next week, the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, will meet the main political groups in the European Parliament as part of his consultations on the future presidency of the European Commission.
On Wednesday 4 June, Van Rompuy, stated: “I received a mandate to consult the European Parliament and member states. I'll consult the European Parliament next week in the meetings with group leaders. The process is continuing”.
The former Belgian prime minister did not rule out discussions on the presidency of the Commission being carried out on the sidelines of the G-7 summit, which opened in Brussels on Wednesday (see other article). With the leaders from Germany, France, Italy and the United Kingdom (this latter is strongly opposed to the candidate from the Christian Democrat EPP, Jean-Claude Juncker from Luxembourg), in attendance, informal discussions can be held.
