Brussels, 04/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 4 June, Der Spiegel's website announced that the German judiciary would be investigating phone tapping by the United States' NSA (National Security Agency) on Angela Merkel's mobile phone. After a thorough examination, the German federal prosecutor announced that he would launch a formal investigation procedure into allegations that the NSA monitored the mobile phone of Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2013. These suspicions were revealed in October and provoked controversy between the EU and US that subsequently led Merkel to request, during a summit that touched on the revelations of Edward Snowden, a non-espionage pact between her country and the USA. The two leaders are also expected to meet in Brussels on 4-5 June at the G7. (SP)
