Brussels, 04/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - In a letter from Palestinian and Israeli organisations on 1 June, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton was called upon to intervene urgently for the 125 Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike (see EUROPE 11092). Ashton's spokesperson has told EUROPE that “the EU expresses concern about the deteriorating health conditions” of the detainees. “The EU recalls its position on Israel's excessive use of administrative detention”, he added. The EU had called on Israel on several occasions to limit the use of administrative detention without trial. The issue is being discussed on a bilateral level with Israeli authorities, said the European External Action Service. (CG)
