Brussels, 02/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 2 June, the European Commission published the list of universities selected for its European Master's in Translation (EMT) quality label. More than 60 universities from 21 member states have been selected to receive this label, which recognises establishments which offer the best Master's level translation training. “The European Master's in Translation is the reference for quality in translator training. It acts as a hub for good practice and cooperation with universities and the language industry”, said Commissioner for Education and Multilingualism Androulla Vassiliou.
The EMT is a partnership project between the European Commission and higher education institutions offering Master's level translation programmes. It has led to a quality label for university translation training that meet agreed professional standards and market demands. As EMT is a registered EU trademark, universities in the network are authorised to use the EMT logo. The main objective of the project is to improve the quality of translator training and to ensure that the EU institutions can recruit highly-qualified translators. The skills profile, laid down by European experts, details the qualifications translators must have in order to work on the current market. An increasing number of universities are using this profile to put together their programmes. In the longer term, the aim of EMT is to add value to add value to the profession of translator within the European Union. The next selection exercise will take place in five years' time. (IL)
