Emergence of electric cars in Europe. - According to the statistics compiled by the European reflection group Transport & Environment, on the basis of European Environment Agency data, the average CO2 emissions from new vehicles in Europe fell by 4% in 2013, to 127 grams per kilometre. The emissions target of 130 g/km, laid down by European legislation for 2015, has therefore been reached two years ahead of time. At 115.7 g/km and 114.9 g/km respectively, PSA and Renault top the table in their efforts to design greener models of car. Other manufacturers, on the other hand, are lagging behind (Fiat, General Motors, BMW, Hyundai, amongst others). In 2013, the car group Volvo earned the most “super-credits”, or bonuses granted to manufacturers which sell greener vehicles (less than 50 grams of CO2 per kilometre). The Swedish group saved 7.1 grams of CO2 due to sales of its hybrid electric car, the V60. It is followed by Nissan (4.7 grams saved due to LEAF), Renault (2.3 grams with ZOE), Toyota and Daimler (1.5 g each with the rechargeable and electric Smart models). (IL)
