Brussels, 19/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - Speaking on Sunday evening on behalf of the European Union, Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, condemned the bloody violence in Kidal, in the north of Mali, between the army and Tuareg rebels, in breach of the ceasefire and other provisions included in the preliminary peace agreement on 18 June 2013. Ashton called for the immediate release of the hostages.
In a press release, a spokesperson for Catherine Ashton stated that the EU deplored the consequences of this violent flare-up that has cost many lives, particularly among the Malian armed forces, and many people injured, including members of the UN Mission for Stabilisation in Mali. The High Representative called on all sides to show restraint and to respect the ceasefire and preliminary peace agreement. The spokesperson said that they denounced the armed occupation of government buildings and hostage taking of personnel and called for their immediate and unconditional release.
Reiterating the European Union's support for the unity, territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Mali, the spokesman added that “the return to peace and stability in Mali requires an end to all violence and inclusive national dialogue. In this context, the European Union is prepared to facilitate the immediate launch of such a peace process, with our international partners, including the United Nations”. (AN)
