Brussels, 19/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - A few days away from the European elections, the EPP Group has very narrowly taken the lead in new forecasts published by the European Parliament and TNS on 16 May - with the EPP party led by Jean-Claude Juncker winning 221 seats compared with 194 seats for the group of Socialists and Democrats led by Martin Schulz. ALDE, for which Guy Verhofstadt and Olli Rehn are leading the campaign, is reportedly in third position again with 62 seats - followed by the European Greens (52 seats), GUE/NGL (45) the ECR (44), the non-attached (38) and the EFD (33). The other formations at the extremes would reportedly win 62 seats. Showing how complex the prognosis remains, another estimate published by PollWatch last week gave just three seats more to the EPP - with 212 seats compared with 209 for the Social-Democrats. The initial results will only become known after 11.00pm on 25 May - the date when the last polling stations will be closed. (SP)
