Brussels, 08/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - The board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), meeting on 4 April, decided to postpone for 60 days the decision on procedures for assigning the .vin and .wine domain names (see EUROPE 11055). ICANN had been looking to assign these names without demanding the introduction of measures to protect geographical indications.
On Tuesday 8 April, France noted in a press release that such a decision by ICANN would be “against the position taken by France and the European Union” and would have a negative impact on the protection of geographical indications and effective consumer information. Thus, if such a decision were taken, France would “initiate a request for reconsideration” at ICANN “against this decision”. (LC)
