Brussels, 01/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - The European consumers' bureau, BEUC, lodged an official complaint with the European Commission on Monday 31 March on the grounds that the commitments offered in February by US internet giant Google in response to allegations of abuse of its dominant position on the internet search and related publicity market do not go far enough. The Commission has opened an investigation into Google's behaviour, but seems to be happy with the commitments (see EUROPE 11040). BEUC director general Monique Goyens says that no valid response has been found to solve the fact that Google is still able to organise its search results as it sees fit. A few weeks ago, Goyens wrote to Competition Commission Joaquin Almunia in this connection, explaining that an agreement based on these commitments would be unacceptable. BEUC tells this newsletter that it hasn't received a satisfactory response from the Commissioner. (EL)
