Brussels, 01/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Füle and Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland signed a “statement of intent” on Tuesday 1 April, putting in place a new framework for cooperation between the EU and the Council of Europe in enlargement and neighbourhood regions for the period 2014-2020. The agreement will enable the two organisations to work together in a more strategic and results-based manner to promote human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the EU enlargement and neighbourhood regions. Füle said the arrangements focus on clear cooperation goals and more predictable financial support on the part of the EU, and establish a framework for long-term cooperation. Jagland highlighted the great complementarity of the two organisations. This agreement, he said, would provide long-term predictability. (CG)
