Brussels, 17/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 18 March, the industry committee (ITRE) will vote on the report by Pilar del Castillo (EPP, Spain) on the single European electronic communications market. This text is a revision of the six current directives in the telecommunications area and mainly focuses on roaming, the open internet, the spectrum, the European communications passport and reform of the European electronic communications regulators body (BEREC). Partisans of net neutrality will have their eyes fixed on what happens with the vote. They believe that there is a danger to the freedom of communication on the internet if certain amendments are adopted. They believe that these amendments threaten the real and unconditional application of the net neutrality principle by allowing telecommunications operators to distribute specialised services to internet users who are prepared to pay for them and so ensure them privileged treatment to the disadvantage of their basic customers. The vote was expected to take place on 24 February but was postponed, officially for procedural reasons. (IL)
