EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) turkey

11/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - Cohn-Bendit says Erdogan is a problem for continuation of accession negotiations. On 11 March, the co-leader of the European Parliament's Greens/EFA Group stated that “Turkey's real problem today is [Prime Minister Recep Tayyip] Erdogan. It's a government in Ankara that is losing more and more democratic legitimisation”, he said during a press conference. “This is a real problem for the continuation of the negotiations” for accession, he said, adding that if Erdogan “continues in this direction, he is like [Ukraine's ousted president, Viktor] Yanukovych. We don't know when he will reach [Russia's president, Vladimir] Putin.” Cohn-Bendit recalled that Erdogan wanted to ban YouTube and Twitter but that Turkey's President Abdullah Gül refused. In Cohn-Bendit's opinion, if the “city of Istanbul” falls in the municipal elections at the end of March, “it will be the end of Erdogan”. (CG)
