MEPs call for restraint

Strasbourg, 07/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - Firmly condemning all acts of violence, terrorism, harassment, hate speech and censorship on Thursday 6 February, MEPs urged all the political actors and security forces to show the utmost restraint and to avoid provocation. In a joint resolution, MEPs call on the interim authorities and security forces to ensure the security of all citizens and to commit to dialogue and non-violence. They again stress that reconciliation and an inclusive political process led by the civilians, with the participation of all democratic political actors, are the key elements of the democratic transition.

Taking note of the new constitution, approved by referendum on 14-15 January, the European Parliament calls for the full and effective implementation of the arrangements on fundamental freedoms - including the freedoms of assembly, association and expression - and on human rights in this new constitution. The European Parliament is concerned about certain articles relating to the armed forces. It also regrets the violent clashes before, during and after the referendum, which resulted in lives being lost. The holding of free and fair parliamentary and presidential elections within the time limits defined by the new constitution is another “crucial” step in this transition process, MEPs add, and they call on the government to ask for an EU observation mission to be deployed to monitor the next presidential elections.

The Foreign Affairs Council will discuss the situation in Egypt on Monday 10 February. (CG/transl.fl)
