MEPs call on regions to invest in smart networks

Brussels, 04/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament is calling on the regions to invest in smart networks in order to move from a “rigid” traditional energy model towards decentralised local production, using largely renewable energies. On Tuesday 4 February, the MEPs adopted, by a small majority (346 votes to 326, with 3 abstentions), the non-legislative resolution of German Green Elisabeth Schroedter on the local and regional consequences of the development of smart networks.

They urge the member states and the regional and local authorities to concentrate public investments on smart energy systems “as soon as possible”, also combining other sectors such as housing and transport, which would also help to guarantee sustainable local jobs. These investments could come from structural funds and European investment funds, the regulations for which include specific provisions for energy from smart networks. The MEPs believe however, that the deployment of these smart networks will require a stable political framework and to this end, appeal to the European Executive. They feel that the Commission should propose clear strategies and objectives in terms of energy efficiency, renewable energy and greenhouse gas emissions for between now and 2030, and promote smart networks in the third energy package. The definition of smart networks should also be updated to encompass the definition of smart energy systems. This would allow the obstacles to the deployment of these networks to be reduced, thanks to the harmonisation of technical standards and exemptions in state aid controls. (MD/transl.fl)
