Second reading agreement on tachograph possible in January

Brussels, 18/12/2013 (Agence Europe) - Second reading approval on the modernisation of the tachograph will be possible during the January plenary session after the European Parliament committee on transport confirmed the agreement reached during the trialogue on the subject on Tuesday 17 December, on the basis of the report by Silvia Adriana Ticau (S&D, Romania). The inter-institutional agreement relates to equipment installed in heavy goods vehicles to record the work time and breaks taken by professional lorry drivers. Revision of the regulation on the tachograph will help to reduce fraud and thus help better address social dumping and ensure greater road safety. Digital tachographs, which will use satellite technology, are therefore planned and will be fitted in all new lorries over the next two years, as well as on all lorries already in use over the next 15 years. The review exempts vehicles that are under 7.5 tonnes and driven by non-professional drivers within a 100 km radius of their usual work base from tachograph requirements. (MD/transl.fl)
