Brussels, 13/12/2013 (Agence Europe) - A European Parliament resolution adopted by the plenary on Thursday 12 December says that member states must stop illegal deportations of Roma and ethnic profiling policies.
The non-binding resolution stresses the need to provide sufficient financing for Roma integration projects from both national and EU budgets. The EP calls on the European Commission to assess infringement of fundamental rights for the Roma in the form, for example, of attacks, discrimination and anti-Roma action and to take violations to court in the future. Another request is for the member states to end discrimination at school and the placing of Roma in specialist units (in some countries). Work should continue on preventing school drop-outs and ensuring access to Erasmus programmes. In another non-binding resolution, MEPs call on the member states to pay more attention to gender issues in discrimination against the Roma. (SP/transl.fl)
