Brussels, 21/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso is completing his Asian trip with a visit to the two special administrative Chinese regions.
On 22 November, the day after the EU-China summit in Beijing, Barroso is due to visit Hong Kong where he will meet the head of the executive, Leung Chun-ying, and the president of the legislative council, Jasper Tsang. On 23 November, Barroso will visit Macao where, alongside the president of this special adminstrative Chinese region which was formerly Portuguese, Chu Sai-on, he is due to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the EU-Macao agreement on trade and cooperation.
During his two visits, Barroso will speak about the EU's attachment to the relationship between the People's Republic of China and its two special administrative regions - a relationship which is based on the principle of one country, two systems. Together with the authorities of Hong Kong and Macao, Barroso will assess the development of bilateral trade and foreign direct investment with the EU. “The EU's relations with Hong Kong and Macao continue to be based on common values, a European heritage and shared interests in trade and economic matters, the envirnoment, education, creative industries and culture”, the European Commission stated in a press release the day before Barroso's two visits.
