Brussels, 20/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - The task force set up after the Lampedusa tragedy (more than 300 migrants died on 3 October off the Sicilian coast) met for the second time in Brussels on Wednesday 20 November. The first meeting of the task force took place at the European summit in the morning of 24 October last. The meeting was expected to examine five key areas: safety and migrant rescue operations in the Mediterranean; assistance and solidarity with member states in the front line of migratory flows; co-operation action with third countries; ways of providing more access to legal immigration into the EU; and tackling the human trafficking networks and organised crime groups. Few details have filtered out from the meeting on the substance of these discussions or even on who the participants were. Some of the countries particularly affected by this issue, such as Italy, are expecting all member states to take part. Some countries are, for example, interested in specific subjects, such as the fight against organised crime. The task force's goal is to develop concrete proposals for the forthcoming Justice and Home Affairs Council at the beginning of December, which is due to make the decisions, as indicated by the most recent European Council. At the meeting, member states will discuss issues such as what resources could be provided to the extensive safety operation (from Cyprus to Spain), which Commissioner Cecilia Malmström proposed in October in Luxembourg. Kicked into the long grass and put back till the month of June 2014, the issue of immigration is expected to be put on the agenda for 19 December. (SP/transl.fl)
