World television day on 21 November

Brussels, 18/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - On World Television Day event on 21 November, organised by the United Nations, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the Association of Commercial television in Europe (ACT) and EGTA, the Brussels based association of television and radio sales houses, will screen a brief video in recognition of TV's crucial role to inform, educate and entertain. Europeans are watching more linear television than ever before - an average of 235 minutes per day. In this connection, the commissioner for education, culture, multilingualism and youth, shared her vision of television's future: “While the digital revolution has empowered individuals with unprecedented diversity of communication tools, television remains the most powerful medium of all. It allows people - of all ages and backgrounds - to easily share information, views and emotions. Television has a key role to play in education and it enables viewers to enjoy the richness of our cultural diversity, contributing to a more creative Europe”. EBU President, Jean-Paul Philippot, also shares this vision and said that TV “is, and shall remain the medium par excellence for people to simultaneously share their emotions”. He also said that the TV remained the dominant platform for live events, despite the rise of social media and the more personalised consumption of content, such as the internet. The president of ACT, Philippe Delusinne, said that television's “success story” can be explained by its ability to remain close to people and tackle subjects that interest them. He referred to the developments in new technology and said that television will espouse these developments with still the same goal, continuing to make interesting programmes for viewers. EGTA president, Franz Prenner, defined television as a medium that has “repeatedly demonstrated its ability to reinvent itself”. (IL/transl.fl)
