UNEP and Connie Hedegaard call for action

Brussels, 05/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - Unless the international community takes immediate large-scale measures to counter the gap between the needs and prospects of greenhouse gas emission reduction, the possibility of resorting to the least costly solution for keeping the rise in temperature below 2°C over this century will rapidly fade away. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) makes this statement in its 2013 annual Emissions Gap Report, published on 5 November just a few days from the opening of the climate conference in Warsaw (COP 19, 11-22 November). Connie Hedegaard, European Commissioner for Climate Action, seized the opportunity to call on all parties to take action. She states: “The bad news of the report released today is that current carbon cuts are too slow to prevent dangerous climate change. But the good news is that we have options to close the gap although time is running out. And some of them are just a no-brainer: energy efficiency, renewable energy and fossil fuel subsidy reform. The report also shows that developing countries already account for about 60% of global emissions, which underlines that the world simply cannot fight climate change effectively without all economies committing their fair share”. The EU contributes 11% of total global emissions. (AN/transl.jl)
