EU calls for continuation of reforms

Brussels, 30/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 29 October, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle again stressed the importance for the Republic of Moldova to address its political and institutional issues “urgently”, “in line with European values”, and he reiterated that “political will is key in this regard”. During his meeting with six Moldovan political leaders - Marian Lupu, Vladimir Plahotniuc, Vlad Filat, Valeriu Strelet, Ion Hadarca and Oleg Bodrug - Füle underlined “the urgency of strengthening political accountability and transparency, pushing for judicial and law enforcement reforms and the overarching importance of combating corruption at all levels”.

The Moldovan government must be fully supported in delivering on the implementation of the European agenda, Füle stated. “Democratic institutions are to be strengthened and their integrity safeguarded to avoid any interference. The transparency of any future privatisation was agreed as being of key importance”, he added.

Füle also reiterated that “inclusiveness had to be an inseparable part of Moldova's European agenda”, and he said that it is important to reach out “not only to all citizens” “but also engaging with all political parties”.

With Moldova being due to initial its association agreement with the EU at the summit in Vilnius, Füle stated the importance of conveying to all citizens in all the regions of the country the substance and expected consequences of Moldova's closer association with the EU.

This meeting took place after the agreement on 4 October with all the country's political parties - including the opposition - to stay in close contact on all issues linked to Moldova's European agenda, Füle stated. (CG/transl.fl)
