EU wants strong, coordinated international mobilisation

Brussels, 21/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - In a conclusions document issued on Monday 21 October by the EU28 foreign ministers, the European Union calls for strong, rapid and coordinated international mobilisation to deal with the scale of the crisis in the Central African Republic (CAR), which it described as a “forgotten crisis.” In the document, the ministers say the EU is concerned at the insecurity and total collapse of public order in the Central African Republic, which is exposing civilians, entire communities, to danger, particularly children, who are the most vulnerable to serious violations of human rights. The EU expresses concern at the humanitarian situation.

The ministers said the EU supports the action of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States and regional mediation to urgently stabilise the CAR. The EU calls for the urgent operational establishment of an international support mission for the CAR under African leadership (MISCA) and says it will provide aid, including finance, for MISCA (see EUROPE 10934). To this end, the ministers urged the European Commission to plan for the urgent mobilisation of the African Peace Fund. (AN/transl.fl)
