Brussels, 17/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 17 October, after a meeting with France's President François Hollande, UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Gutteres announced that France has agreed to take in 500 Syrian refugees. Paris said that it would take in 500 people in a situation of great vulnerability. France has already taken in 3,000 Syrian refugees since the start of the crisis in 2011 and is granting them refugee status. The war in Syria has resulted in the displacement of over 2 million people, who have taken refuge in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey. The UNHCR asked the member states to take 10,000 Syrian refugees in charge in 2013, and 30,000 in 2014. (SP/transl.fl)
