MEPs' green light to participating in EU programmes

Brussels, 10/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 10 October, the European Parliament approved the conclusion of a Euro-Mediterranean agreement establishing an association - between the EU and its member states on one side, and Jordan on the other - on a framework agreement on the general principles of Jordan's participation in EU programmes. In their recommendation, MEPs stress the importance of continuing to promote closer cooperation and dialogue with Jordan, as part of the European neighbourhood policy, and of continuing the political and economic dialogue between the EU and Jordan. MEPs also hail the commitment of the king to promote large-scale reforms, and they underline that it is important for these reforms to lead to sustainable results, particularly in terms of social justice.

Recalling that Jordan is suffering the effects of the Syrian crisis - with over 500,000 refugees and with serious consequences on the Jordanian economy and budget - the European Parliament says that it is important to provide Jordan with enough financial, technical and humanitarian aid.

MEPs also support Jordan's proactive and constructive role in the efforts to find lasting solutions to the different conflicts in the Middle East. (CG/transl.fl)
