German President Joachim Gauck announced on 9 October that he was looking forward to seeing progress towards the release of former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, following a meeting with his Ukrainian opposite number Viktor Yanukovych. “We spoke of the need to make progress in the case of Yulia Tymoshenko and I believe we will see action that will satisfy us”, he said on a visit to Poland. Germany hopes Tymoshenko will be pardoned (see EUROPE 10937). German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle was in Ukraine on 10-11 October and was due to discuss, inter alia, Tymoshenko's situation. Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said he expects Ukraine to meet the conditions set for signature of the association agreement at the Eastern Partnership summit on 29 November. (CG/transl.fl)
