Luxembourg, 10/10/2013 (Agence Europe) - The Spanish Minister for Transport, Ana Pastor, presented her European counterparts with a possible plan to carry out studies into installing safety belts and adapting luggage holds on board trains. The minister was speaking during the “any other business” part of the Transport Council on Thursday 10 October in Luxembourg. A statement from her delegation and the European Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas on the train accident in the summer at St James of Compostella had been planned. Kallas highlighted the fact that the European railways were among the safest in the world and that train accidents were always unique in the way they occurred but that they did not result from any systemic shortcomings. The results of the enquiry into this accident still need to be published and the Commissioner believes that the European Railway Agency should tackle safety issues, similarly to the European Agency for Aviation Safety (see other article).
