Growing inequality in the US. Economist, Emmanuel Saez, has published a study, “Evolution of the Top Incomes in the US”. This indicates that inequality between the different sections of US society increased over the course of Barack Obama's first mandate, to the almost exclusive benefit of the richest households. Last year, 10% of the richest Americans (those with an income of more than $114,000) accounted for more than half of the country's total income (50.4%). Over the period of four years, the richest 1% has seen their incomes shoot up by almost a third (31.4%). All the others barely managed to remain stable (0.4%). It should also be highlighted that over the past four years, 95% of increases in income went to the richest 10% of the population. (IL/transl.fl)
