Brussels, 30/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - Only a few days after the latest controversy between France and the European Commission over the Roma, experts from DG Justice and national experts in charge of Roma contact points met in Brussels on Monday 30 September to prepare the annual report on inclusion strategies put in place by the member states. Also invited to the meeting, which will continue on Tuesday, were local and regional authority representatives, so that discussion could be held on the reality on the ground and the inclusion initiatives in place. At the end of June, in a recommendation to the member states, the Commission highlighted that funding allocated for the integration of the Roma was too low and called for a set percentage of cohesion funding (around 20%) be ringfenced for social inclusion. It was precisely on this that Commissioner Viviane Reding criticised France on Wednesday of last week. She pointed out that France, which stands accused of dismantling several Roma camps, does not use the money at its disposal to promote inclusion. (SP/transl.fl)
