18/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - NGO Human Rights Watch criticises Hungary's constitution. On Wednesday, 18 September, the non-governmental organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW), denounced the recent changes made by Hungary to its constitution as “largely cosmetic”. This is the fifth amendment to the text since 2012 and, according to the Hungarian Conservative government, should bring a halt to any criticism levelled at it. HRW, however, considers that the changes leave “huge problems that undermine the rule of law and basic human rights”. The amendments approved by the Hungarian parliament involve rules for election campaigns, religious freedom and the independence of the judiciary. HRW argues that, although these changes are “positive”, concerns still persist. (LC/trans.fl)
