Brussels, 18/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - A memorandum of understanding between the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Commission puts conducting of European stress tests on the path to international recognition.
On Tuesday 17 September, European Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger and IAEA Director General Yikiya Amano signed a memorandum of understanding on nuclear safety which establishes a cooperation framework to help improve nuclear safety in Europe.
The memorandum creates an enhanced framework for planning various forms of cooperation, such as expert peer reviews and strengthening emergency preparedness and response capabilities. It will allow the Commission and IAEA to coordinate and avoid duplication of effort, and more generally, contribute to strengthening nuclear safety worldwide. (EH/transl.fl)
