Brussels, 17/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - Visiting Tunisia last week, the EU special representative for the Sahel region - Michel Reveyrand-de Menthon - stated that the EU “wants to help Tunisia in the fight against terrorism and in establishing peace in the whole of the Sahel region”. He proposes a concerted strategy with all the countries of the region.
During a press conference in Tunisia on Thursday 12 September, he said that the European objective is “to consolidate cooperation in security through strengthening the exchange of information”. “Visits” are planned as part of the exchange programmes, as well as “the organisation of training sessions for security agents, the national guard (Ed: local police), and components of the army”. Visits by advisers and experts will take place to “pass their know-how on to the Tunisian administration”, he said.
According to local media, Reveyrand-de Menthon stressed the need to establish “common cooperation strategies between the different states of the region, especially those of the Maghreb” in order “to fight effectively” against terrorism and all forms of trafficking “which have already caused significant damage” (our translation throughout).
