EU wants more effort to tackle cyber crime

Brussels, 16/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted on Thursday 12 September (585 votes to 45 with 8 abstentions), the European Parliament called for an “internal cyber security market” to be set up. MEPs called on member states to enhance their cooperation against cyber crime. This resolution is a response to the cyber security strategy proposed by the Commission last February.

The text drafted by Malcolm Harbour (ECR, United Kingdom) and Andreas Schwab (EPP, Germany), highlights the need for member states to adopt “national cyber security strategies which shall cover technical, coordination, human resources and financial allocation aspects… without undue delay, in order to provide for comprehensive risk management procedures”. The text highlights the fact that many network and information security incidents transcend national borders and have the “potential to undermine the functioning of the internal market and the confidence of consumers in the digital single market”. MEPs also say that member states should make a full commitment to tackling these challenges.

With regard to cooperation, MEPs are calling on member states and European institutions to set up a network of Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTS), operational 24/7, to fight against cyber crime. They also want all member states to ratify the Council of Europe Convention on Cyber Crime (Convention of Budapest). (SP/transl.fl)
